Olympiad Surfing

Generative AI | Motion Design | Poster Art

A poster for the 2024 Paris Cultural Olympiad Poster Competition—a collaboration between the City of Paris and Los Angeles County celebrating the Olympic handover from Paris 2024 to LA 2028. Selected as one of 24 winning designs from students at ArtCenter, CalArts, Otis, and EPSAA Paris.

As only one AI-generated poster was selected in the competition, created using Midjourney and Photoshop's generative tools, and then refined through extensive post-production and typographic composition.

Concept and SketchesThe brief asked for a poster representing the Olympic handover between Paris and LA. Early explorations included: a window motif framing the Eiffel Tower, the Olympic rings reimagined through paint strokes, a surfer passing through the rings, the Griffith Observatory as an LA landmark, and aesthetes’ silhouettes against the national flag color running paths.

AI GenerationThree directions were developed using Midjourney and Photoshop's generative tools: a window with light casting the Eiffel Tower's shadow, a surfer gliding through wave-formed Olympic rings, and the Tower framed through an interior window. The surfing concept proved strongest—dynamic, cinematic, and symbolically rich.

Typography & Color
The lettering references David Carson's deconstructed collage style. I tested the approach in a standalone poster (left) before integrating it into the final composition. Color experiments ran in parallel—early versions used French tricolor tones across the image. The final decision: a French-style surfboard design rather than flag colors, letting the board carry national identity more subtly.

Motion
Four key frames map the animation sequence—the surfer moves through the wave-formed rings as the composition shifts. The motion version was exhibited on digital screens at The Music Center in downtown LA.

Exhibition
The poster was displayed along the Saint-Martin canal in Paris during the 2024 Games and at the Bridge Gallery in LA City Hall. It will return for the LA 2028 Cultural Olympiad exhibition.
